Frequently Asked Questions
Movement & Playing Technique
-
Our drums have larger resonating chambers, so a smaller diameter ErgoSonic instrument can replace larger conventional bass drums. ErgoSonic Angled Shell Marching Bass Drums are an average of 1.67lbs lighter than conventional bass drums of equivalent size.
-
No, not only ErgoSonic’s drums have a wider range of tuning options available, so a smaller drum can be used to produce the same relative pitch as larger instruments, they also have a lower center of gravity, providing greater stability and lighter feel. These features are particularly useful for performers smaller in stature. Researchers at Binghamton University found that the ergonomic design of the Angled Shell Marching Bass Drums requires 67% less effort for a performer to move forward and 14% less effort while crab-walking side to side.
-
Actually, because our drums have a horizontal playing surface played like every other matched grip percussion instrument—on one head with a vertical stroke—drummers can use all of the traditional percussive strokes without needing to learn the horizontal stroke techniques required to play conventional bass drums.
Scientifically Proven Acoustic Advantages
-
Our angled shell drums were tested by researchers at Binghamton University in an anechoic (echo-free) chamber to measure the decay and character of the sound. ErgoSonic’s angled shell drums are scientifically proven to produce the same pitch quality as conventional drums.
-
The ErgoSonic Balanced Projection Drum Kit has forward facing, angled resonant sections of toms and floor toms that provide greater directionality of sound and acoustic focus, and the larger resonating chambers produce a wider range of tuning possibilities. The resonant head of our toms and floor toms can be independently tuned and ported, greatly expanding the drum’s tuning and muffling capabilities.
-
Our drum kit’s bass and snare drums have been specifically modified to match the volume and projection of the angled shell tom design.
-
Like all ErgoSonic drums, the Angled Shell Concert Toms have larger resonating chambers, producing a wider relative pitch range that expands the potential tuning possibilities. Our concert toms have a resonant head on the bottom front, which can be independently tuned, muffled, and dampened to produce a wide variety of timbres. Muffling felts, kickports, and other tuning, dampening, and muffling devices can be more effectively positioned and used on our drums than other conventional drums.
-
With ErgoSonic’s unique, angled shell design and larger resonating chamber than both a 36”x22” and 40”x22” conventional concert bass drum, ErgoSonic’s 36” Suspended Concert Bass Drum has increased resonance, punch, and impact with greater directionality of sound and enhanced rhythmic clarity.
-
The ErgoSonic Angled Shell Bass Drum has both a batter and resonant head that can be independently tuned and muffled to produce a much wider range of tuning possibilities. The drum’s resonant head makes it easy to control the quality of sound, degree of attach, length of decay, and resonance of the drum. Adding versatility to tuning options, a ported resonant head may be used to alter the pitch and projection characteristics of the instrument, or the resonant head may be completely eliminated, providing a more direct bass drum sound with more defined attack and intensity and less resonance.
